Graphics Card Buying Guide: Power, Fit and Variants

Updated 4 November 2026

A practical PakDevices buying checklist for comparing the actual item and its written terms. This guide does not claim a hands-on test of every model.

Quick buying checklist

  • Exact GPU, memory and partner-board SKU
  • Card dimensions and case clearance
  • PSU model, supported cables and connectors
  • Display mode, output test and written checking terms

Identify the exact card

Record the GPU name, memory capacity and board manufacturer’s complete model or SKU. Desktop and laptop GPUs are separate products. A GPU family name does not establish the cooler, dimensions, connector layout or power limit of every partner card. Compare the board that is actually offered.

Measure clearance before buying

Use the case and card manufacturers’ dimensions to check length, height and slot thickness. Include any front radiator, drive cage or nearby expansion card that occupies the same space. Leave the clearance required for the power cable. Do not assume that a card fits merely because the motherboard has a compatible graphics slot.

Check the power supply as a model, not just a wattage

Identify the full PSU model, its supported connectors and the card manufacturer’s requirements. Check the rest of the system and the cable instructions. Avoid undocumented adapters or mixing modular PSU cables based only on how they look. Ask a competent technician to check uncertain wiring before power is applied.

Match the monitor connection

Confirm the actual card outputs and the display’s supported inputs, resolution and refresh rate. The available mode can depend on both ends of the connection and the cable. A monitor’s maximum refresh rate may not apply to every input. Check whether any required adapter is active or passive and suitable for the intended mode.

Inspect a used card without inventing a performance score

Ask for a demonstration that detects the correct GPU and memory, drives the intended display output and remains stable in an appropriate workload. Look for image corruption, unexpected shutdowns, damaged connectors or abnormal fan behaviour. A benchmark result depends on the rest of the system and its settings; it does not certify a card’s history or remaining life.

Agree what is included

Confirm the cooler and any modification, bracket, adapter or support accessory. Read the checking period and return procedure. Compare current seller quotes for the same board and condition rather than treating a reference GPU specification as a final local price.
