SSD Buying Guide: Fit, Interface and Health
Updated 4 November 2026
A practical PakDevices buying checklist for comparing the actual item and its written terms. This guide does not claim a hands-on test of every model.
Quick buying checklist
- Exact device model and supported slot
- Drive model, capacity, interface and size
- Current health report and safe diagnostic check
- Written seller terms and included accessories
Start with the device, not the advertised speed
Write down your laptop or motherboard’s complete model number and open its storage specifications. Record the supported interface, drive size, mounting position and any cooling or firmware requirements. A fast drive is a poor purchase if it cannot be installed or used by the host.
Separate the shape from the interface
A 2.5-inch SATA drive and an M.2 drive require different physical connections. M.2 describes a format, while SATA and PCIe NVMe describe interfaces and protocols. A matching-looking socket does not establish that the host supports the drive. Check the manual rather than forcing a connector or relying on a generic marketplace title.
Compare exact capacities and models
A 120GB drive is not a 128GB drive, and 240GB, 250GB and 256GB records should remain distinguishable. Compare the full model, capacity, new or used condition and included accessories. Manufacturer speed and endurance specifications can differ between capacities in the same product family. Use the capacity-specific datasheet.
For a used SSD, ask for evidence from that drive
Ask the seller to show the model and serial number detected by the computer, a current health report and an appropriate diagnostic test. A photograph of another drive or a single reassuring percentage does not establish the condition of the item being sold. Avoid asking anyone to expose personal files. Back up your data before testing or replacing storage.
Treat peak speed as a conditional rating
Manufacturer sequential speeds describe specified test conditions. Host interface, workload, temperature, free space and other factors can affect the result. Do not judge authenticity or everyday responsiveness from one advertised maximum or expect a faster-generation drive to overcome a slower host interface.
Agree the purchase details
Confirm whether the price is per drive, the actual checking period and who pays any delivery or return cost. Ask whether the mounting screw, adapter or heatsink you need is included. For an upgrade, include the cost and plan for installation and data transfer. Keep an independent backup; a warranty is not a backup service.
